Compressive Neuropathies are common in Diabetes. Nerves which are passing through limited spaces as in the Carpal Tunnel ( Wrist) and Tarsal Tunnel ( Ankles) are the ones to be most affected. These are called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome respectively. These problems occur in non Diabetics as well , but are more frequent in Diuabetics. This initially causes tingling or burning sensation in half of the hand or part of the feet, but as the disease progresses and nerves suffer further damage, sensation is lost leading to numbness in hands and feet. These Neuropathis are often confused with Peripheral Diabetic Neuropathy and not treated properly. Treatment of Nerve compression may require small surgeries for the release of the affected nerve.
Diabetic Diet and Total Control of Diabetes are very helpful in preventing these complications of Diabetes.
